The French Broad by Wilma Dykeman (Rhinehart and Co. ) (). The French Broad is a mountain river in North Carolina and Tennessee that drains the basin between the Great Smokies and the Blue Ridge. This is the story of the river and the people that settled its /5. The French Broad River Paddle Trail opened in to connect more than miles of the French Broad River from around Rosman, NC, to Douglas Lake, TN. The Trail serves to protect the river as a resource for recreation, environmental stewardship, education and economic development.
The French Broad is believed to be the third-oldest river in the world. It's the longest free-flowing river in North Carolina, and it inches into Tennessee. Specifically within the French Broad River sub-basin, point source pollution, including both current and lingering effects from past pollution, contributes significantly towards habitat degradation and the extirpation of priority species. The Pigeon River sub-basin has a long history of point source pollution.

The Upper French Broad River Watershed is located in East Tennessee and includes parts of Cocke and Greene counties. It is approximately 1, square miles ( square miles in Tennessee) and drains to the French Broad River. The North Carolina portion of the French Broad River basin is 2, square miles and lies entirely in the Blue Ridge ecoregion.
